Git-r-Done For Nebraska Greats!
During the year-end giving season, help Nebraska’s former college athletes.
Nebraska has a rich history of producing incredible college athletes who have gone on to greatness both on and off the field. But sometimes, the promising story takes a tragic turn. The lives of two former Husker football players, Andra Franklin and David Humm, were the inspiration for the Nebraska Greats Foundation.
The Story of the Nebraska Greats Foundation
After an illustrious college football career, the Miami Dolphins drafted Franklin in the second round. Unfortunately, his NFL career was cut short by injuries, and his health declined rapidly afterward. In 2006, he passed away from heart disease, having been unable to afford basic medical care.
Learn more about Franklin’s story.
In his middle age, Humm was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and other health challenges that led to financial ruin and left him virtually helpless.
Learning of the struggles of these two men, Jerry Murtaugh, a former Nebraska Football All-American, was moved to create an organization to provide medical and financial assistance to former college athletes in need. Humm was the first recipient of a Nebraska Greats Foundation grant.
Since its founding, our foundation has awarded over $1 million in grants to help former Nebraska collegiate athletes facing medical and financial hardships.

From Softball Field to Wheelchair: Meet Tesla Oldfield-Davis
Your donation can provide critical medical and financial assistance to Nebraska athletes in need, like Tesla.
Tesla, a standout performer for the Peru State Bobcats and a caring mother, had a pretty prosperous athletic career in Softball and Cross Country through her college years.
Unfortunately, at just 27, she was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) when her daughter was just one year old. ALS is a neurological disease that slowly affected her brain and spinal cord mobility, leaving Tesla in a wheelchair.
She and her family were devastated, but she never gave up hope and quickly sought help. At The Nebraska Greats Foundation, we were able to provide valuable equipment that her family’s insurance would not cover.
In this video, Tesla shares how life-changing the help from the Nebraska Greats Foundation has been for her and her family.
This new equipment has slowed the degenerative effects of the disease, but most importantly, it has allowed her more restful sleep and quality time with her daughter.
