Nebraska Greats Facts

The Nebraska Greats Foundation (NGF) is a 501C-3 not-for-profit community foundation based in Omaha, NE.  It relies SOLELY on cash contributions, event proceeds, in-kind donations, sponsorships and private corporate support to fulfill our mission of assisting former college athletes in need.  The NGF receives NO TAX dollars or government support.

The NGF Board of Directors serve without compensation donating not only valuable time but financial support.

The NGF enjoys official partner status with each of Nebraska’s 16 current four-year colleges or universities.   Each institution grants the NGF use of its licensed marks and logos and often donates both hard goods and coach/athlete appearances on

The NGF has a minimal staff, uses donated office space, and has very little operational overhead, which means a very large percentage of NGF revenues is directed toward assisting current and future athletes.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who is eligible for a grant?

Any former letter winner from any of the 4 year Nebraska Based college or university (including the former Dana College) with a medical and financial need.

  • Do recipients need to have earned a degree from these universities?

    No

  • Are all medical conditions considered?

Most all conditions including assistance with substance abuse are covered in some manner. But each situation is different. Reach out to us and let us try to find a way to help.

  • What documentation will I be asked to provide?

Service invoices (medical or insurance bills), bank statements, income statements (check stubs), a letter from your attending physician confirming your condition.

  • Are all expenses covered?

Most expenses qualify but we specialize in insurance deductibles, pre and post-operative care, travel to and from treatments, prescriptions, and rehab services. At no time does a recipient receive a direct subsidy. Instead, we simply reimburse approved providers, services, and past-due bills.

  • Do the recipients receive the funds?

No. The NGF works on behalf of the recipients by negotiating with service providers and issues funds directly to the providers and NEVER to recipients.

  • Who will have access to my application information?

Confidentiality is very important. Any and all information is seen only by the members of the Board of Directors, the Administrative Director and the Physicians Review board. At no time, will any medical or financial information be made public. However, each applicant is asked to sign a release of information waiver so that the NGF can publicize the assistance but specific details are withheld.

  • Is there a limit to what I can receive?

Currently, the NGF caps all annual grants at $20,000. However, applicants are welcome to apply for future grants.

  • What financial condition must I be in to qualify?

Each applicant’s condition is different. The NGF does a comprehensive review of each applicant’s financial position and acts accordingly. However, it is expected that each applicant fully exhausts his or her own resources and reaches insurance benefit caps before they are eligible.

  • Do I have to be a Nebraska resident?

    No.

  • If I have insurance or other benefits such as disability, am I disqualified from a grant from the NGF?

Not necessarily. Each case in independently reviewed and if there is a need that is unmet by current benefits, the NGF may be able to provide for it.

  • If I receive grant, what will be expected of me?

Nothing is required however, the NGF appreciates any volunteer time speaking publicly, recorded testimonials on behalf of the NGF and appearing free of charge at our public events.

  • If I have additional questions who should I contact?

Sandy Zoroya, Administrative Director at szoroya@nebraskagreats.org or 702-321-9136.
