Creighton University Breaks Ground on New Baseball & Softball Fields
JUNE 10, 2025
Creighton University has begun construction on two major athletic facilities:
- A new all-turf baseball practice field, located near Florence Blvd and Cuming St., will be completed by June 2026. Designed to mirror Charles Schwab Field Omaha, it will serve Creighton baseball and NCAA Men’s College World Series (CWS) teams.
- A new softball competition field, near 20th and Cuming St., is scheduled to open in fall 2025. It will feature updated turf, enhanced dugouts, new video board, and expanded fan seating.
Both fields will also support Creighton intramurals, club sports, and community events.
Project Highlights:
- Funded by public and private sources, including:
- $30M from Nebraska’s Shovel-Ready Fund
- $2M from College World Series of Omaha, Inc.
- Facilities will be available earlier in the season due to turf design.
- Demolition of the old Creighton Sports Complex will make way for a new 5.7-acre campus quadrangle.
- Design work by HDR Architects and Lempka Architects.
- A February 2025 city ordinance approved necessary land transfers.
Why It Matters:
- The new fields enhance Creighton’s reputation as a key host for the College World Series, which drew 372,000+ attendees and $115M in economic impact in 2024.
- The upgrades will help Creighton student-athletes train year-round and elevate the fan and athlete experience.
- Adds to Creighton’s broader $500M+ investment in Omaha’s urban core since 2015, alongside new residence halls, academic centers, and campus revitalization.
