Midland University A Legacy of Lutheran Learning

Midland University

Midland University, located in Fremont, Nebraska, stands as a testament to academic brilliance and community involvement. As a private Lutheran establishment ensconced within a 33-acre campus, it seamlessly blends tradition with transformation. With around 1,600 students, the university promotes a close-knit, immersive learning experience.

Midland’s journey began in 1883 with the founding of Luther Academy, which coincided with the 400th anniversary of Martin Luther’s birth. Originally located in Wahoo, Nebraska, the academy would eventually evolve into the institution we recognize today as Midland University.

Midland University

The academy underwent numerous pivotal transformations over the years. A key milestone was its merger with Midland College, another Lutheran institution initially based in Atchison, Kansas. This union in 1962 resulted in the formation of Midland Lutheran College. The institution moved to Fremont in 1919, becoming a cornerstone of the community and a hub for higher education.

A turning point occurred in 2010 when Midland Lutheran College rebranded itself as Midland University. This rechristened institution embarked on an expansive journey, adding five new sports teams and bolstering its academic programs.

Midland University Athletics: Go, Warriors!

Midland University’s commitment to growth was reflected in the expansion of its varsity sports programs, which increased to 27 across diverse disciplines. The university’s strategic approach to expansion and reform bore fruit as student enrollment more than doubled by 2013 from its previous levels.

Midland University’s athletic prowess, embodied in the Midland Warriors, parallels its academic excellence. Donning the official colors of navy blue and orange, the Warriors compete in an astounding 33 intercollegiate varsity sports, as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

The Warriors have had numerous successes. The softball team made appearances in the Women’s College World Series in 1970 and 1971, the Wildfire dance team clinched several Great Plains Athletic Conference titles, and both men’s and women’s powerlifting teams have had remarkable victories at national championships.

Notably, the women’s volleyball team exemplifies the university’s commitment to achieving both athletic and academic success.

Midland University continues to draw upon its Lutheran heritage and innovative strategies to provide students with a diverse, inclusive learning environment.

Midland University

Booster Club

Like the Nebraska Greats Foundation (NGF), the Midland Booster Club is dedicated to helping and improving the athletic scene of Midland and the Midwest.

The Booster Club is committing $500,000 over the next seven years to Scholarships for student-athletes and a future Indoor Athletic Facility. The members of the Club provide financial support to the student and coaches representing Midland University to help fund equipment, facilities, recruitment, and travel expenses.

Club members can also access exclusive content, pre-game events, special seating, and VIPs at certain venues. Additionally, members receive Warrior merch and other fun stuff.

Midland University Hockey

Midland is the proud home of a women’s hockey team. These warriors have consistently produced outstanding results in the regular season and playoffs.

The committed coaching staff and passionate student-athletes have led to numerous Division I tournament appearances in recent years, making Midland University one of the region’s top destinations for aspiring hockey players.

Also, the Warriors Hockey team is constantly working with their community and future hockey players (like the Flyers) to create a better and stronger community on ice. The team believes in the power of volunteering with quality time and talent.

As it grows and adapts to the evolving landscape of higher education, Midland University remains a beacon of academic prowess and community engagement in Fremont, Nebraska.

Midland University

Sky Thompson

from Balcarres, Saskatchewa, Sky is a forward player of the Warriors hockey team and a special Midland University Athletics program member. She has been playing in the regular and playoff season since 2021.

In recent times, Sky was injured on ice, and though she is recovered and is back on her feet, there were still some fees that her insurance didn’t cover and that needed to be paid from her medical assistance.

Thank to all the generous donations to the Nebraska Greats Foundation, all hospital treatment not covered by insurance was paid in full. This allows Sky to continue to focus on her Hockey career without the stress of bills and debt.

Midland University

Victories and Achievements

The Bulldogs have tasted the joy of victory with three NAIA National Championships in their portfolio: men’s outdoor track & field (2015), women’s outdoor track & field (2016), and women’s basketball (2019). Concordia’s softball team has also shown remarkable prowess by making it to the Women’s College World Series in 1970 and 1971. The university fosters a vibrant intramural sports scene as well.

The Concordia Invitational Tournament (CIT)

A long-standing tradition since 1950, Concordia participates in an annual men’s basketball tournament against other LCMS universities. A women’s tournament was added in 1965, increasing the scope of the competition. Concordia Nebraska has distinguished itself by holding the best aggregate record in both the men’s and women’s tournaments. Since 2001, the participating teams include Concordia University, Nebraska, Concordia University Wisconsin, Concordia University Chicago, and Concordia University, Ann Arbor.

Concordia University stands as an institution of academic excellence, athletic prowess, and community spirit, continually nurturing its students in a holistic manner. From its academic achievements to its athletic victories, Concordia continues to shine.

Nebraska Greats Foundation Recipient

For the Nebraska Greats Foundation, every Bulldog Athlete is part of the football and sports community history, and we are eager to give back to the people who have made so much for sports in the state and the people of Nebraska.

Joel Brott

Brott is a former Bulldog team member and Concordia’s excellent graduate; unfortunately, he suffers from early-stage complications from Multiple Sclerosis.

Despite living miles away from the nearest hydro-therapy treatment center, Joel was determined to keep up with his treatment; however, these constant travel expenses were taking a toll on his health and economy.

But thanks to all supporters and donors of The Nebraska Greats Foundation (NGF), we installed a hydro-therapy device right in his home. This made his health journey so much more comfortable and allowed him to get more regular treatments.

Now he can run his family-owned small business without long commutes or other health interruptions.

Concordia University Athletics

Nebraska Greats Foundation

The Nebraska Greats Foundation is dedicated to giving back to the athletic community by helping former graduates of Concordia University and any other College.

The foundation provides financial assistance and mentorship as athletes navigate their health journey. We aim to help them regain their health, self-esteem, love, and confidence.

As Jose said, the NGF “restored the confidence in myself I’d lost. How do you really thank somebody for that?

Through its dedication to academic excellence and its robust athletic program, Bellevue University stands as an institution that enriches the lives of students of all ages.

Bellevue Champion: Dennis Stahlnecker

Dennis Stahlnecker is a former Bellevue University baseball star and an example of hard work and dedication; He recently faced a financial burden due to hospitalization for heart disease and pneumonia.

Dennis had been fighting these terrible conditions for some time now, but he endured and persevered through them.

His disability insurance could not cover all medical-related expenses, leaving him desperate for help; That’s when he reached out to the Nebraska Greats Foundation in 2020 for assistance with his unsettled invoices.

Thankfully, we offered some much-needed relief and ensured his medical bills were covered.

What’s New With NGF Schools

Bellevue University has announced plans to construct a new 72,000-plus square foot, multimillion dollar Athletics Field House just west of the University’s main campus, on Harvell Circle off of Herman Drive.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Field House was held Friday, Oct. 28, 2022.

The two-level building will include multiple competition and practice courts for both basketball and volleyball; Athletic training facilities, including a weight room and locker rooms; a press room area; and office, meeting and storage space.

Facility designs have not yet been finalized, but Bellevue University President Dr. Mary Hawkins expects the project to be completed in 18-24 months after the start of construction.

“This new facility and our student athletes will be a winning combination,” Dr. Hawkins said. “This state-of-the-art facility is a major step in our strategic facilities plan. It opens up opportunities for us to enhance and expand student services and resources for our students who learn on campus and those who learn online.”

Athletic Director Ed Lehotak said all of the University’s student-athletes and coaches are excited to see the project come to life. “We expect this to have a very positive impact on the experience for our student athletes, as well as our staff, faculty, fans and officials,” Lehotak said. “Athletes on all of our sports teams and our coaches will benefit in a big way.”

The Bruins currently compete in 11 traditional men’s and women’s sports and one non-traditional co-ed sport, Esports.

Injuries are often an inevitable reality for athletes competing at the collegiate level. During their careers, 90% of student-athletes report an athletics-related injury, according to the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. What is the need?

The deteriorating economy with run-a-way inflation is affecting not only the cost of health care, but may be making the need for it worse. A recent poll published by the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) outlined how health care costs factor into decisions about insurance coverage and care seeking, and rank as a top financial worry. The main takeaways from this report include:

  • Many U.S. adults have difficulty affording various health care and dental costs.
  • The cost of health care often prevents people from getting needed care or filling prescriptions.
  • High health care costs disproportionately affect uninsured adults, Black and Hispanic adults, and those with lower incomes.
  • Those who are covered by health insurance are not immune to the burden of health care costs.
  • Difficulty paying medical bills can have significant consequences for U.S. families.

Tim Wurth

Former Husker Running Back, 1976 World-Herald boys athlete of the year and Nebraska Greats Foundation recipient Tim Wurth passed away on Friday, April 29, 2022.

Wurth was known as a tenacious football player who had a career total of 766 yards and seven touchdowns. Wurth lettered at NU in 1977 to 1979. He is also in the Omaha Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame.

Tim’s son, Zac wrote on Facebook:

“It is with great sadness we announce the death of our beloved dad, Tim. We have had many people reach out and ask what they can do to support us. We ask that if you would like to do anything please support the Nebraska Greats Foundation that helped him in his time of need.”

Without insurance, Wurth applied for a grant from the NGF seeking assistance with Cataract surgery stemming from Type II Diabetes. Wurth also needed assistance with multiple hospital stays as a result of chronic neuropathy.

The Nebraska Greats Foundation‘s singular mission is to help former college athletes – both men and women – from any school in Nebraska in their times of medical need. Your gift today will directly help someone who urgently needs it and will greatly appreciate it. They once gave their all for their schools, their teammates and us. Let’s return the favor.

Most contributions to the NE Greats are fully tax deductible. We accept:

  • Cash
  • Credit cards (on negreats.org)
  • Stock transfers
  • Insurance proceeds
  • Real estate
