Nebraska Greats Foundation Executive Director Set to Leave

Jim Rose, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE NEBRASKA greats fOUNDATION Set to Leave

Nebraska Greats Foundation’s executive director, Jim Rose, is ready for a new chapter in his life. After five years of guiding the Nebraska Greats Foundation, in which the organization achieved new records in terms of reach and impact, Rose is set to step away from his position on September 30, 2023.

Under his guidance, the Nebraska Greats Foundation was able to help more recipients than ever before by spreading the message to a wider audience and improving the financial sustainability of the organizations.

About Nebraska Greats Foundation’s Executive Director

His work is a testament to his dedication and passion for the cause that the NGF works for every day, and these past five years have shown everyone his drive, excellence, and commitment to the cause.

Rose has always been an integral part of the NGF family, having been featured in numerous episodes of the NGF Podcast, being the primary media contact, handling high-resolution file requests, and working closely with all team members of the organization.

Nebraska Greats Foundation's Executive Director Jim Rose Set to Leave

“Five years ago, I asked the Board of Directors to assist me in establishing financial sustainability, reinforcing existing and creating new relationships, and building on a fabulous mission of assisting our sports heroes in their time of need.

I am proud and humbled by the work we’ve done. But in recent months, I’ve been drawn to new projects which need the attention I’ve been committing to the NGF.”

Rose stated about his time at NGF.

Nebraska Greats Foundation’s Executive Director Achievements

The role of an Executive Director, like Jim Rose, is indeed pivotal to an organization like the Nebraska Greats Foundation (NGF). This role serves as a key component, connecting all facets of the organization while driving its vision forward.

The executive director is in charge of developing and implementing strategies to ensure the organization has the funding it needs to operate effectively and fulfill its mission.

This can include everything from managing budgets and resources to spearheading fundraising efforts and seeking grants or other sources of income. Under Rose’s leadership, the NGF has seen significant improvements in its financial sustainability, allowing it to expand its reach and help more recipients than ever before.

But perhaps most importantly, the Executive Director is responsible for leading with example toward the organization’s mission.

In the case of the NGF, this means assisting athletes in their time of need. As the face of the organization, the Executive Director plays a critical role in promoting this mission, both within the organization and to the public.

Said Board President Johnny Dorn

His leadership has helped bring much-needed attention and support to former collegiate athletes in their time of need, positively affecting the lives of members of the Nebraska sports community.

For those who had the privilege of working with Jim, he was more than just a leader – he was a mentor, a guide, and an inspiration. His departure will be deeply felt, but his legacy will continue to inspire and guide the Nebraska Greats Foundation.

What is Next for The Nebraska Greats Foundation?

The Board of Directors is reviewing its success in the last five years and intends to begin the search for an Executive Director in the near future.

Looking forward, the Board of Directors is keenly aware of the need to find a successor who can continue the momentum that Rose has set in motion.

The search for a new Executive Director will begin soon, aiming to find someone who can bring someone who stays true to the NGF’s mission the same way Jim did.

In the meantime, the operations of the NGF are in capable hands. The Executive Committee, along with the dedicated staff members, are managing its day-to-day activities and operations.

The departure of Jim Rose marks the end of a remarkable chapter for the NGF. As we prepare for his departure, we do so with immense gratitude for his contributions and a heartfelt wish for his success in future endeavors.

Health Issues In Sports: What To Look For

Most Common Health Issues In Sports

Do you know what are the most common health issues in sports? Most of the time, when we watch TV or go to a varsity sport, we don’t even think of the pressure that the athlete’s bodies are under; all the training, the injuries, and the problems that constant practice and games can cause.

Life on the collegiate sports field is a test of strength, passion, and endurance. But, as much as it is an arena of glory, it can also be a stage for various health issues and accidents.

Today, we’re delving into the most common health concerns faced by athletes and, hopefully, shining a light on what athletes can do to prevent these injuries or conditions from affecting their health.

Most Common Health Issues and Injuries in Nebraska Sports

Nebraska, a heartland where passion for varsity sports runs deep, boasts an array of remarkable teams and a tightly-knit community of fans and athletes.

College Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Baseball, and Hockey are amongst the most played sports in the state; these games gather the community together every week to see them play.

Nebraska is also home to amazing and professional teams like the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Creighton Bluejays, the Omaha Storm Chasers, the Mavericks, and much more, making it a diverse ground for a lot of sports and physical activities.

Physical Health Issues In Sports

However, the wide array of physical activities comes with its share of challenges. In this vibrant sports tapestry, injuries and health issues are inevitable. Here are some of the most common ones

Sprains and Strains

These injuries involve a partial or complete tear of a ligament (sprain) or muscle (strain). They’re particularly prevalent in contact sports like football and wrestling.

Contusions

These occur when a direct blow or repeated blows from a blunt object strike part of the body, crushing underlying muscle fibers and connective tissue without breaking the skin.

injuries broken arm ngf

Hamstring Pulls:

Early in the season, especially among high school athletes, hamstring strains are frequent. They result from overstretching or tearing of one or more of the hamstring muscles.

Overuse Injuries

Stress fractures are a common form of overuse injury, particularly in sports like volleyball and basketball. They can affect various parts of the body, including the femoral neck/pubis and femoral shaft.

Concussions

Particularly common in football, these traumatic brain injuries occur from a blow to the head or a violent shaking of the head and body.

Fractures

These involve a break in a bone and can range from small cracks to complete breaks. They’re often caused by high-impact collisions or falls.

Head and Neck Injuries

These can range from mild strains to serious trauma. They’re especially prevalent in contact sports like football.

Mental Health Issues In Sports

Varsity sports, while being a platform for athleticism and camaraderie, can also be challenging for athletes’ mental health. Here, we’ll delve into the most common mental health issues these athletes face

Anxiety Disorders:

These are among the most common psychiatric problems in varsity athletes1. Anxiety disorders can manifest as excessive worry, panic attacks, or specific phobias, often exacerbated by the high-stress environment of competitive sports.

Mood Disorders

This category includes conditions like depression and bipolar disorder. The pressure to perform, fear of failure, and dealing with injuries can contribute to mood disorders in athletes.

Stress-Related Issues

The demands of elite sports, coupled with academic responsibilities, can lead to significant stress. This can manifest as difficulty sleeping, irritability, and even physical symptoms like headaches or stomach discomfort.

Mental Health in sports Nebraska Athlete

Depression

Depression is a serious concern among student-athletes. The constant pressure to excel, fear of injury, and balancing academic work with athletics can be overwhelming, leading to feelings of sadness, loss of interest in activities, and fatigue.

Treatment for Health Issues In Sports

Navigating the field of sports injuries can be a daunting task, especially for young varsity athletes. Knowing when to treat an injury at home, when to seek professional help, and where to go can make a significant difference in recovery times and future health.

Nebraska sports

Physical Injuries: When and Where to Seek Help

Many minor injuries, such as sprains or strains, can be treated at home using the R.I.C.E method: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.

Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications can also aid in reducing pain and inflammation. However, we recommend checking with a health professional beforehand.

If the injury is severe, doesn’t improve with home treatment, or if symptoms worsen, it’s essential to seek professional help. Sports medicine clinics and hospital emergency departments are equipped to handle acute sports injuries.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation is a fundamental component of the treatment process for numerous sports injuries. It’s far more than a quick fix; it’s a holistic approach that seeks to restore not only the physical but also the psychological well-being of the athlete.

Physical therapy often includes conditioning exercises aimed at stretching and strengthening the injured area.

These exercises are tailored to the athlete’s specific needs, helping them regain their original athletic abilities. It’s not just about healing the present injury but also about retraining the body to move correctly, thereby minimizing the risk of future injuries.

In addition to physical therapy, the rehabilitation process may involve specialized techniques like massage, taping, and electronic nerve stimulation to alleviate pain and facilitate healing.

These interventions, when combined with traditional therapy methods, can significantly enhance the rehabilitation outcome.

Mental Health Treatment: Stress and Depression in Varsity Sports

Mental health is just as crucial as physical health in the realm of sports. Athletes are often under immense pressure to perform, which can lead to stress, anxiety, and even depression if not managed effectively.

Moreover, coping with injuries and the associated recovery periods can also take a toll on an athlete’s mental well-being.

The mental resilience developed through sports can help athletes overcome these challenges, but it’s essential to remember that they’re not immune to mental health issues.

It’s vital that we foster a supportive environment in sports where mental health is prioritized and athletes feel comfortable seeking help when needed.

When To Reach Out

If an athlete feels persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities they usually enjoy, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, or has thoughts of self-harm, it’s time to reach out to a professional.

School counselors, psychologists, and psychiatrists are trained to help manage these issues. Many colleges also offer mental health services specifically tailored to support student-athletes.

It’s important to remember that seeking help is not a sign of weakness; it’s a step towards resilience. As we cheer on our athletes, let’s ensure they have the information and support they need to stay healthy, both physically and mentally.

The Struggle of Health Problems

Health problems can significantly impact the life of an athlete, both on a physical and emotional level. Physically, health issues can hinder an athlete’s ability to perform at their best, affecting their strength, stamina, and overall athleticism.

On an emotional level, health problems can take a toll on an athlete’s mental well-being. The inability to participate fully in their sport can lead to feelings of disappointment, frustration, and even depression. Athletes may struggle with a sense of loss as they are unable to engage in the activities that bring them joy and purpose.

For the Nebraska Greats Foundation, it is essential to address both issues and guarantee that former athletes receive the help they need to avoid any physical and psychological sequels in the future.

The Huskers Basketball Team

The Huskers basketball team demonstrates a strong commitment to the well-being and success of their student-athletes both on and off the court. With a focus on holistic development, the coaching staff and support personnel prioritize the physical, mental, and emotional welfare of each player.

They provide resources and guidance to ensure that student-athletes maintain a healthy balance between academics and athletics. The team’s commitment extends beyond the basketball court, fostering an environment where players can thrive academically, socially, and personally.

We recognize and celebrate the hard work the Huskers do with their teams and the amazing support they bring to the basketball community. We feel proud and honored to be able to contribute to the life quality and happiness of his players.

The History of Nebraska Women’s Bowling Team

The sport underwent significant evolution over the centuries, with different forms emerging in various cultures. Interestingly, bowling at pins likely began not as a recreational activity but as a religious ceremony in ancient Germany.

Now, let’s fast forward to the dawn of bowling in Nebraska. The sport gained popularity in the United States in the 19th century, with the first indoor alleys built in New York City. It wasn’t long before the sport made its way to the Midwest.

The establishment of the women’s bowling team at UNL marked a significant milestone in the history of the sport in Nebraska. The team’s inception signaled a new era, one that recognized and celebrated female athletes’ contributions to the sport.

Over the years, the UNL women’s bowling team has achieved incredible success, with 14 Husker bowlers qualifying for nationals and 116 tournament titles since 2021. The training process for our bowlers at the University of Nebraska Lincoln is a rigorous and meticulously planned regimen designed to hone their skills and prepare them for the challenges of competitive bowling.

While bowling may not require the same level of physical assertiveness as some other sports, it demands a unique blend of physical strength, precision, and mental toughness. Our athletes train intensively, focusing on both the physical and strategic aspects of the game.

Accuracy and consistency are other critical components of the training process. Bowling is a game of precision; hence, the team spends hours practicing their shots, aiming for consistent delivery, and mastering their technique.

Nebraska Women’s Bowling Husker Training Center

The Husker Training Center, located at the East Campus Union of the University of Nebraska, is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to nurturing the talents of the university’s bowling teams.

Since its establishment, the Husker Training Center has played a pivotal role in the team’s success by offering a dedicated, high-quality training environment. The Importance of Mental Health in Sports: Why It matters

The Importance of Mental Health in Nebraska Sports

The importance of mental health in sports is often overlooked when we talk about athletics; it’s easy for us to focus on the physical progress and endurance of athletes and their career achievements; it’s exciting and emotional!

However, did you know that nearly one in four college athletes exhibit symptoms of depression? This condition can significantly deteriorate their lives, impede their willingness to practice, and affect their performance.

Mental Health in sports Nebraska Athlete

The Importance of Mental Health in Sports

Mental health in sports goes beyond just being able to compete with a clear mind; it refers to the psychological and emotional well-being of athletes, and it encompasses a broad range of issues.

These issues are not exclusive to professional big league athletes; varsity and local sports athletes are equally prone to mental health issues. But why exactly is that? What causes an athlete to get to those dark places?

Overtraining and Physical Exhaustion

The pressure to consistently deliver peak performance and be perfect can lead to overtraining, resulting in chronic fatigue, which can trigger depression episodes.

Overtraining can also lead to burnout, which is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged and excessive stress. When athletes feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands, they are more prone to have mental health issues.

Injuries

Sports injuries can have a profound psychological impact on athletes. The physical pain, combined with the stress of recovery and the fear of not being able to return to the sport, can lead to feelings of loss of self-worth. Athletes who are injured may also struggle with their identity, especially if they have always identified themselves primarily as an athlete.

Moreover, Physical injuries and recoveries can take a big toll on a personal financial situation, which can lead to depression. The constant worry about mounting bills and an uncertain future can distract from the recovery process, and most athletes are unaware of the nonprofit organization that can help them.

mental health in nebraska sports

Pressure and Stress

Athletes often face immense pressure to perform, both from themselves and others. This constant stress can take a toll on their mental health over time.

For varsity athletes, the pressure of keeping a scholarship and reputation in their academy and society can be overwhelming.

A 2020 study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that elite athletes are at an increased risk of mental health symptoms and disorders because of the constant stress put on them to accomplish their goals.

Fear of Failure

Athletes are frequently under the microscope, with every move scrutinized, every mistake magnified, and every performance evaluated. The high expectations set by themselves and others can create immense pressure to perform flawlessly.

That’s why the fear of underperforming or letting down teammates, coaches, fans, and overall failure can be a significant source of anxiety and depression.

A NIGHT OF NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL (5)

Retirement from Sport

Transitioning out of a sports career can be a challenging time for athletes. Athletes often spend years, even decades, giving everything they have to a sport and a team.

This intense commitment and singular focus can result in a strong identification as an athlete. When the time comes to retire, they may struggle with a loss of identity. And feeling like they lost their purpose in life.

Lack of a Support System

Lastly, despite being surrounded by teammates and coaches, some athletes may feel isolated or misunderstood, which can exacerbate feelings of depression.

While teammates and coaches can provide a valuable support network, they may not fully understand the depth of an athlete’s emotional struggles, especially when athletes are often perceived with a stereotype of being strong and not needing any help or support system.

the importance of mental health in sports

Athletes, Not Entertainers

Think about Simone Biles, Michael Phelps, Serena Williams, or any of your favorite athletes, and think of what you feel when you see them in action.

Think of the millions of people who show up for the Olympics, for tournaments, or tune in to their favorite sports channel just to see them play. How will that make YOU feel?

In the 21 century, when every move and game is aired and recorded for eternity when social media is used to discuss every move, athletes are more and more like celebrities, like entertainment for the viewers, and it’s like professional sports players.

It’s essential to challenge the notion that athletes exist solely for our entertainment. We must remember that behind every performance is a person who experiences joy, pain, triumph, and defeat. Recognizing and respecting their humanity helps create an environment where athletes can pursue their careers without compromising their mental well-being.

Asking for Help

It might seem simple and every country intuitive for us: if you feel depressed and constantly struggle, you just ask for heldon’tt as we discussed before, athletes don’t usually have the privilege of being vulnerable.

Nebraska Greats Foundation- Mental Health in sports

What Stops Athletes from Asking for Help?

Despite the importance of seeking help, several barriers often prevent athletes from doing so. One significant obstacle is the stigma attached to mental health within the sports community.

We have made a narrative where sports players and athletes are not supposed to be sad; they are the ones that should be strong and help our community. Social norms and community pressure will stop them from asking to be helped. Many athletes fear that admitting they’re struggling mentally will be seen as a sign of weakness, negatively affecting their reputation and career.

They’re often expected to ‘push through’ difficulties, leading many to believe they should handle their mental health issues alone.

Overcoming the Barrier

Seeking help is not an admission of weakness but rather a sign of strength and self-awareness. It shows that the athlete recognizes their struggles and is proactive in addressing them. By seeking help, athletes can not only improve their mental health but also enhance their performance and extend their careers.

Furthermore, when high-profile athletes openly seek help for mental health issues, it sends a powerful message to others who may be struggling in silence. It can help to break down the stigma around mental health in sports, encouraging more athletes to seek the help they need.

What Can We Do?

Creating a healthier and more supportive sports environment involves multiple strategies that can help athletes manage pressure. If you are part of any sports community, have friends and family in the atheist realm, or are within your ability to contribute, here are some things you can do

Nebraska Greats Foundation the importance of mental health in sports
  • Encourage Open Conversations About Mental Health in sports

Creating an environment where mental health is openly discussed can help break down the stigma associated with it. Athletes should feel comfortable talking about their struggles or concerns without fear of judgment or repercussions.

  • Provide Access to Mental Health Resources

Coaches, teams, and sports organizations should provide access to mental health professionals who specialize in working with athletes. These experts can offer tools and strategies to help athletes manage stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges.

  • Prioritize Well-being Over Winning

While competition is a fundamental part of sports, the well-being of athletes should always come first. Coaches and parents can help create this culture by emphasizing effort, personal improvement, and enjoyment of the sport over winning at all costs.

  • Foster a Supportive Environment

Teammates, coaches, and fans play a significant role in an athlete’s experience. By promoting a supportive and respectful environment, we can help athletes feel valued and understood, reducing the pressure they might feel.

  • Promote Balanced Lifestyles

Spathlete’stournaments can´t be the only thing in an athlete’s life; sure, they can be one of the most important, but not the sole reason for their existence.

Encourage athletes to pursue interests outside of their sport. This balance can help athletes cope with stress, prevent burnout, and provide them with a broader identity beyond their athletic roles.

  • Provide Education

Train coaches, parents, and athletes about the signs of mental distress and the importance of seeking help when needed. This education can equip them with the knowledge to handle these situations effectively.

  • Celebrate Resilience and Coping Skills

Instead of just celebrating victories and achievements, we should also acknowledge the importance of resilience, coping skills, and personal growth. Thiit’sift in focus can help athletes understand that it’s okay to face challenges and that overcoming these is a victory in itself.

This dinner event is a key highlight in a series of volleyball activities involving the University of  Nebraska Lincoln, University of Nebraska Omaha, University of Nebraska Kearney, and Wayne State  College, set to take place this August.

Among these, a monumental volleyball event at Memorial Stadium stands out, an occasion that saw tickets sell out within just three days. This underscores the enormous popularity and statewide support for volleyball in Nebraska.

“We’re thrilled to host these esteemed athletes, along with Coach John Cook, for an informal Q&A  session,” said Jim Rose, NGF Executive Director. “This is a unique opportunity for fans to engage with  their volleyball heroes.”

Head Coach John Cook expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming month of volleyball, stating, “This is going to be a monumental month for volleyball in Nebraska. We’re not only dreaming big but  achieving big, fostering a true statewide celebration of the sport we all love.”

NGF Executive Director, Jim Rose, stated, “Our gratitude extends to all our generous sponsors,  including NRG Media (B107 FM), Olsson and Associates, WarHorse Casino, and Two Brother’s  Creative. Their support is pivotal in making this celebration of Nebraska volleyball a reality.”
